This has been a year of unprecedented instability for so many of us and our loved ones. As an American patriot and Zionist with close family in Israel, it has been a year of regular whiplash. I imagine that many of you feel similarly, irrespective of your politics.
I cannot overstate how helpful it has been to work with children this week. No matter how dizzying the world is, we show up and do what we always do: we love and teach your children. Today more than ever in my lifetime, the Jewish people need an up-and-coming generation that is proud, resilient, deep, creative, open-minded, and capable of seeing and grappling with complexity. It is actually exciting for us to help children navigate these times with thoughtfulness, passion, and civic joy in understandable and meaningful ways at each age. Difficult times are an opportunity for a lot of learning.
Thank you for this anchoring purpose and for the comfort your children provide. In a time of war in Israel, upheaval in America, fear, uncertainty, and disappointment, your children are wellsprings of beautiful possibility. They remind me every single day that I am sincerely optimistic about the future (even when they misbehave).
